There was many similar games back thousands of years ago. The Royal Game of Ur, played in ancient Mesopotamia looked much like backgammon does today, and even later on in history was a closer match to the game we all love today. In Rome there was Ludus duodecim scriptorum ("Game of twelve lines") too.
In English, the word "backgammon" is most likely derived from "back" and Middle English "gamen", meaning "game" or "play". The earliest use documented by the Oxford English Dictionary was in 1650.
The most recent addition was the adding of the doubling cube.
